While outright mimicry is obviously out of the question, you can certainly seek to mirror the communication styles of the people you're engaging with, in order to help you establish rapport and common ground. Suppose someone looks at you for just a couple of seconds before looking down, or goes past you and then looks back at you. This nonverbal style tells you something important about the person you're engaging - sustained eye contact is undesirable. So, mirror that to establish a comfortable level of communication that's implicitly agreed upon by both parties. This is an unspoken level of communication. By mirroring the tendencies of the other party, you are sending a message of respect and concession to the communication style being modeled.
